In Feng Shui, the bedroom is meant for sleeping, rejuvenation and intimacy. Nowadays the bedroom has become the all purpose room filled with unused treadmills, computers, tv’s, and the list goes on. I recall a consultation with one client who had an over sized desk and file cabinet covered with a computer and piles of paper work in her bedroom. My first question to her was “Is that desk the first thing you see every morning?” And she said, “Yes!” “How does that make you feel?”, I asked. “Anxious, exhausted”, she replied. After she recognized the negative impact her desk and files were related to her personal energy and love life, she immediately removed them and rearranged the furniture. She emailed me the next week raving about shifts that had taken place from these simple recommendations and how she saw an immediate improvement.

The bedroom is an essential room in your home and ideally should be reviewed regularly, especially if you are ending a relationship or getting a divorce, recovering from an illness or having sleep issues.

Below are some examples of bedrooms with Feng Shui Do’s and Don’t s. As you review these pictures notice your immediate reactions and what thoughts arise for you. Some may not be your style but they can give you some ideas for your own bedroom.

Sleep, worry, difficulties in a relationship or finding one.

I don’t know the occupant of this bedroom, but it’s a great example of Feng Shui Don’ts.

Here’s why:

  • Overflowing clutter of clothes is blocking the pathway to the closest, dresser and far side entrance of the bed. Blocking the entrance for your partner could be blocking this person from attracting a mate or indicate one partner is dominating the relationship.
  • Awakening every morning to this clutter can make these individuals feel anxious, nervous and deplete their energy. He/She is also probably always late because they can’t find clean clothes. One positive thing is they have a solid wood headboard.
  •  My recommendation is to start by de-cluttering and organizing and then decorating.

Balance, Relaxation, Warm and Cozy

Wow, can you feel the difference from the previous picture?

Let me explain why this passes the Feng Shui rules.

  • No clutter!
  • Balanced with two lamps and side table for each person.
  • Solid wall behind bed and looks as if they have full view of the room.
  •  Headboard is good, but do prefer it to be a little bit higher.
  • lthough bed is aligned with the window, the beautiful curtain minimizes the chi flow (energy) not disrupting the occupants energy.
  • Lighting is soft giving a soothing energy to sleep, but yet a romantic feel perfect for being intimate.
  • Touches of color with the pillows and beautiful flowers.

Good for sleeping but lacking the Sex factor!

Very common simple, sophisticated feel, but it lacks personality and romance.

This room passes the soothing and calming energy for sleep and rejuvenation, but fails on the intimacy meter.

Monotone rooms are boring and can indicate lack of fun and romance in the relationship.

  •  Simple adjustments could be switching the lamps for ones with more color, style and/or even a shade change with a more warming fire (red, orange, bright yellow) color.
  •  Add more color with a beautiful throw blanket or sheets in silk or abstract design.
  •  Add artwork or decor that reflects romance that is symbolic of the occupants’ relationship.
  •  An area rug can also warm up the room and make it feel cozy.

Romantic but a little too much fire

This room passes for romance, but fails for ideal sleeping.

Here’s why:

  • Red is related to the energy of fire in Feng Shui and needs to be used with caution in the bedroom. The occupants in this room may have issues falling asleep or may argue a lot.
  • To balance out the fire, I would suggest keeping one wall red for accent and paint the others a more neutral color.

Guess who’s celebrity bedroom this is…

From Elle Decor Magazine, this photograph was featured in an article on celebrity bedrooms and I was shocked when I found out who the occupant of this bedroom is. I’ll give you a hint: a famous female author whose books were turned into a successful TV show. Send me an email if you want to know the answer: christine@christinebove.com.
