Are you fed up with your piles and clutter around your home and office but lack the motivation to get it done?

I recently did an informal survey on Facebook about people’s struggle with clutter and learned that the top reasons for not getting it done was time and motivation. Is that you?

Clutter is a difficult task because it is always before us.  It is tied to our busy lives on an emotional level. Not dealing with your clutter keeps you stuck in the same old energy, preventing anything from changing in our lives. Every time you pass your piles or think about how you need to tackle your clutter, you drain the positive energy out of you both emotionally and physically every day.

For most people, Summer tends to bring a more laid back schedule.  Our work and social life seem to be less demanding and we tend to have a more laid back attitude.  With a less demanding schedule from our jobs and families, Summer gives us a little extra time to attend to our personal needs and our clutter!  Plus, the sun is out longer, so we have more energy to accomplish our projects either in the morning or at night (depending on whether you are a morning or night person).

Thus, Summer tends to be a great time for de-cluttering your space.  Below are 4 reasons to motivate you to take action this Summer with your clutter.

1) Take advantage of the extra sunlight!

Whether it’s early morning or after work, the sun is out longer so we tend to have the energy to do more.  Are you a light-sensitive sleeper who awakens with the sun?  Then instead of lying in bed thinking about your life, get up and spend 15 minutes de-cluttering one area of your space. Sometimes just completing one task in the early part of the day gives you a feeling of accomplishment and motivates you to get even more done in your day.  It gets that ball rolling! Try putting a timer on for 15 minutes and de-cluttering an area for that time.  Sometimes you can be more successful in those 15 minutes than if you set aside 3 hours!

If you are someone who has more energy in the evening, make the same commitment,  just 15 minutes of de-cluttering time. You may find you even sleep better because you not only accomplished something on your to-do list, but you also released some emotional clutter from your mind.

2) Make money on your clutter!

Summer is prime-time for a garage sale! People live for weekend garage sales so why not capitalize on that!  Plus, you can make some cash while getting a tan at the same time! Get motivated by setting a goal of what you can do with the extra cash!  Do you need money to replace something?  Or do you just want to treat yourself to a spa day or some new clothes or furniture?  If you don’t feel like you have enough stuff to fill a garage sale, ask some friends or neighbors to join you.  Whatever you don’t sell, pile into the car and take directly to your local Goodwill or Salvation Army.

3) Get a clutter buddy!

Make it fun by asking a friend to help you and you help her! Set a time each week when you can go to each other’s homes or even meet virtually.  Set mini-goals of what you want to accomplish each week.  Agree to share with each other the reasons why you tend to hold on to things and then encourage each other to move forward and get rid of the things that are just piling up and weighing you down.  When you have accomplished your goals, celebrate together!

4) Take a de-clutter your junk road trip!

Share your stuff and deliver it to your friends and family! If you have guilt overthrowing your clutter out consider passing it along to friends. Make it fun by having a road trip visiting friends who may want some of your old stuff.  Remember, one man’s junk is another man’s treasure!  You could get your friends involved and make it an exchange, swapping furniture, appliances, books, etc.  Drop your unwanted clothes by a friend’s house who shares the same size and style. Consider helping out college students and grads who are moving into apartments and need furniture, appliances, etc.

Sometimes our main reason for not releasing the clutter is the guilt of not knowing what to do with it.  You’ve spent good money and it’s a shame to just throw it out, so finding someone who can really appreciate what you have will make it so much easier to give away.

When you let go of things you let the universe know you are ready for something even better to come into your life, but that can’t happen if you’re clutching on to your old stuff and old energy.  Re-energize by letting go of those things that are draining you!
