The other day, it was a beautiful 72 degrees here in Connecticut, while my friend in Colorado was sharing pictures of their first snowfall. I was in shock, especially because our weather was so warm, and I couldn’t imagine anywhere having snow. However, that was the reality.
Although the temperatures are still fluctuating daily, the colder weather is becoming more consistent here in Connecticut. This means it’s time to review our winter coats.
Winter coats are definitely investment pieces that you want to have in your closet for years, and it’s important to consider a variety of styles for different occasions. From casual to formal, long to short, and lightweight to super warm, having the right coat is essential.
When considering new coats or jackets, there are several factors to keep in mind. A common question I receive is whether outerwear needs to match your outfit. While having a coordinated look is nice, it isn’t always necessary. You do want a jacket that complements what you are wearing, so selecting the right color to match your wardrobe is a good place to start. Black and brown are the most popular colors and go well with most wardrobes, but don’t hesitate to explore new colors or patterns to refresh your outerwear style.
Let’s explore coats in different styles, textures, and colors so you can decide which additional pieces you may need in your closet.
Starting with classic puffer coats, these are essential for snowy winter days. This is my go-to jacket for that type of weather, so having a hood is important. Hats tend to flatten my curly hair, so I prefer hoods. With a hood, I don’t have to worry about removing it and finding a place to store it—or, worse, losing it. A simple hood is sufficient; I prefer them without fur since my thick hair can make that option uncomfortable. The good news is that many brands offer removable hoods and collar linings.
Our first selection is the classic puffer coat from Gorski, available in two versatile colors: navy and camel. Both options pair well with almost any color. This classic ski coat is suitable for cold and snowy days and more casual outings. Its more form-fitting shape provides a flattering look.
Next is the belted puffer jacket from Sam Edelman, which comes in green and red. I appreciate the added belt that defines the waist, creating a more flattering silhouette. If you do a lot of walking in winter, I recommend the bright red option, as it stands out and makes you more visible.
For warmer days, consider the Double-Breasted Herringbone Coat from Ralph Lauren. This coat is ideal for lighter layering and provides a polished, professional appearance. Its neutral color complements jeans, long skirts, and accessories such as brown or burgundy gloves and scarves.
If you want to feel more like Grace Kelly, the vibrant red Sofia Cashmere stand collar coat offers two styles depending on whether you wear it closed or open. This flexibility allows you to create different looks based on your mood, making it ideal for polished and professional occasions.
Another chic option is the Zoya Faux-Fur Belted Coat from L’Agence. This fun coat is perfect for a date night or when you want to dress up. It pairs well with various neutral colors and can be worn open or cinched with a belt. Belts are convenient because you don’t have to worry about losing buttons, and they provide added flexibility if your weight fluctuates.
If you prefer something that covers your hips, consider the Maximilian shearling-trimmed Leather Jacket. This longer, ¾-length coat features a slender fit and a snap button closure for a sleek appearance. It’s reversible too, although they don’t say that but it’s shown in the photos.
For a more formal choice, I love the mid-length hooded baby alpaca wool coat from Sentaler. It includes a hood and a wrapped belt, giving it a polished and chic look while keeping you warm. This coat comes in a variety of fantastic colors.
Another stunning option is the emerald jewel-tone Mari Wool Double-Breasted Coat from Elie Tahari. This gorgeous color, paired with ivory gloves and a scarf, exudes regality! It’s perfect for cold days, especially when wearing more formal attire, as it completes your outfit while keeping you warm.
If you want to stand out in a crowd, consider the Leiko trench coat from Mackage. Its eye-catching two-tone colorway is ideal if you’ve always wanted a white coat but have been worried about dirt. This coat is perfect for fashionista days and is highly recommended for networking events, as people will easily spot you. Just be sure to check the dry cleaning instructions, as some coats require specific types of cleaning.
One important thing to consider when shopping for coats is their maintenance. For everyday wear, look for coats that can be machine-washed, especially if they tend to get dirty. Dry cleaning can be time-consuming and costly, so it’s something to factor into your regular cleaning routine. And if you have wool coats, when was the last time you had them dry-cleaned?
Your coat completes your outfit, and warmth is essential during the colder months, but you don’t have to sacrifice style. Be sure to review your coats and ensure you have a variety of styles that suit your lifestyle.
