Sometimes, buying cheaper products can lead to unexpected results, but not always in the way we hope.

My curls require much maintenance, so using the right products is essential. Over time, I’ve learned to master my curls. Like many of us, I want to look my best and enjoy great hair days, which means finding the unique formula that works for me. Great hair days are synonymous with great days overall.

Several years ago, I learned an important lesson about the pitfalls of opting for cheaper products. I was frustrated while calculating the costs of the curly girl brand products I needed. To save money, I switched to alternatives that seemed to work almost as well, but they didn’t provide my hair with the care it needed. I expressed my frustrations to my stylist during one of my hair appointments. As she explained why certain products worked and what I should be doing, I had an “aha” moment—an epiphany about a belief causing many issues. This realization empowered me to control my hair care and make more informed choices.

It was silly to go to my stylist for a haircut and ignore her advice! I realized I had fallen into the “But Syndrome.” This is when someone offers you advice, and you counter with all the reasons why it can’t work. It’s a self-defeating mindset where you argue for your limitations instead of seeking solutions. I was so focused on the cost of the recommended products that I couldn’t see the value they would bring to my hair.

The cheaper products didn’t nourish my hair or keep it moisturized and healthy. So, what was I gaining by saving money? Nothing, because they didn’t solve my problem. At that moment, in the stylist’s chair, I decided to adjust my budget to buy the recommended products and commit to my weekly deep treatments.

On my drive home, I realized Ulta sold these products and frequently had sales. Plus, I could earn points every time I shopped there. I began thinking of ways to take advantage of these sales, accumulate points, and get products for free. I discovered that the weekly coupons I received via email applied to my desired product line. Then, I found out that the brand’s website offered special promotions. Solutions began to flow once I shifted my perspective and committed to using the right products. It got even better when CVS started carrying some of the products, allowing me to use my weekly coupons there as well.

I learned that we often rush to say no to things purely based on price. Instead of focusing solely on cost, it’s worth exploring the value they bring to our lives. By viewing this as an opportunity to lead a more abundant lifestyle with what I truly desired, I began to think differently. This mindset allowed me to find quality products at great value and even attract more financial abundance into my life, all because I was dedicated to my goal.

Now, I encourage you to reflect on this in your own life. Are you opting for cheaper clothes or shoes? Are you neglecting self-care sessions or skipping treatments that prevent you from seeing real results? In the end, even though you might save money, if you’re not achieving the results you want, it’s not worth it.

I’m not alone in this pattern, and I often help my clients recognize it when they deprive themselves of a curated wardrobe that truly aligns with who they are. It’s not about shopping at high-end luxury brands; it’s about finding quality clothes that last for seasons and putting together timeless outfits that complement your body shape and fit your lifestyle.
