Does the thought of negotiations stress you out?

I remember the first time I was able to negotiate my salary. It was at my second job in a New York City startup. My boss, who helped me find the job, mentioned that anything is negotiable. At the time, I was using a headhunter, and when I asked for more money, they were able to negotiate a higher salary for me. Later, I realized I could negotiate my rent and mentioned this to my real estate agent, who helped me secure a good deal.

However, despite getting what I wanted in both cases, I realized I wasn’t the one negotiating and hadn’t quite figured out how to master the skill. I’ve read a couple of books on the subject, but I learned a lot from an Instagram Live I did with Lena Sisco, a Deceptive Analysis and Body Language Expert.

If you missed the interview, you can check it out here. You will gain so much value, and I’m sure you will have a great outcome the next time you negotiate. In this interview, Lena gave her tips on body language and mindset, and we discussed what you should and shouldn’t include in your outfits. We both agreed on the importance of colors, accessories, and attire in shaping your confidence and how others perceive you.

Let’s start with colors and what the best colors to stick with are. Cooler, darker colors such as navy, black, grey, jewel dark green, or burgundy are calming and best suited for tense situations. Although red is considered a power color, it’s best to avoid it in negotiation settings as it can potentially cause irritation and escalate emotions.

Lena emphasized the significance of considering colors for tense situations and taking up space. This involves standing tall with shoulders back and chin up to exude confidence and appear taller. She also recommended wearing full-length pants to project a more authoritative presence. However, one of the most important tips is to prioritize comfort; your outfit should allow easy movement, and you should feel at ease while standing or sitting. Feeling uncomfortable in your outfit can undermine your confidence.

Now, let’s review some outfits I put together and why these work for negotiation meetings.

This first ensemble showcases a popular trending green, but it’s a more subdued shade, so it comes across as moderately energetic. The blazer pairs well with the dress or pants, depending on your preference. Adding the blazer elevates the outfits and conveys a professional and serious message, which is worth considering based on the nature of your meeting. It’s important to note that if you have to remove your jacket, ensure that you have the right top underneath to maintain a professional look. In the interview, I asked Lena about taking off your jacket during a meeting, and you should watch the interview to understand why she explained that this move could work against you. It’s important to be mindful of this. Additionally, wearing the same color on top and bottom can create the illusion of extra height.

For my second outfit, I chose a vibrant royal blue color to add a touch of elegance. I paired it with matching wide-leg pants, perfect for those who prefer a looser fit. As I mentioned in many talks, free-flowing pants provide great movement, especially for engaging in conversations.

These pieces can also be worn separately, mixed, and matched with items from your closet. I intentionally chose blazers and tops with V-necks to keep the neck and throat area open, which is considered a power point on our body. Avoiding turtlenecks or button-up collars is essential to allow yourself to breathe. It’s important to keep your outfit simple and breathable, especially for those who may get nervous in certain situations.

For my final outfit, I chose a classic black dress and added a white blazer to create a more energetic and uplifting vibe. You can go for a classic black-and-white look or achieve a Chic Channel style!

Black and white create a more energetic feel than an all-black outfit, helping you appear lively and strong. Keep your jewelry simple, avoiding loud bangle bracelets and big earrings. For these meetings, aim for an elevated, professional, clean, and simple look, as it leaves a great impact. As for the shoes, I chose black and white to add style and flare for the fashionista who wants to add a unique touch to her wardrobe.
