The most important door in your home is the front door. Too often I find the front is either blocked, not used or missing from the home. In Feng Shui, the front door is where the chi (energy) enters your home, it’s also considered the door to your heart! The front door should not be neglected! In my practice I have made suggestions to enhance or make changes to my clients’ front doors and when they implement these changes they  always see results. I’m happy to share this success story with you today.

A couple of months ago, I was a guest on a weekly call with Jean Noroton, a prominent home flipper in the area. Jean purchases homes, rehabs them then sells them. On this call, I asked Jean if she had a house that we could Feng Shui during the interview. Jean sent photos of a home she had redone and was up for sale. Jean explained that the house had not received any offers. As I looked through the pictures, I spotted some keys areas to focus on. Right off  I was confused that the picture that seemed to be the front entrance had no front door or no numbers on the house. I thought this must be the back of the house, but then I discovered it was the front and that the “front” door was actually on the side, not visible to anyone on the street! So this house was not inviting anyone to come see it!

My suggestion to Jean was to make the front door more visible and inviting.  Ideally, it would be best to move the front door from the side to the front but that wasn’t a cost effective option.  First, I suggested she create a path to the front door. I told her to add flowers to the walkway, bright colorful flowers that create energy flow and point the way to the door.  Adding numbers to the end of the pathway would let people know where they were going and let them know they were at the right place.  I also suggested dressing the door up with a color and add more plants or cute little garden signs that say welcome. Basically, these suggestions were meant to create an energy flow directing guests to the entry of the home that gives the message, “please come on in.”

Sometimes I will see entrances to a home and I always ask the owner where do you want your guest to go? Make this obvious to your guests by making the entrance clear and inviting. When you have too many options to enter a home the guest or potential home buyer may get confused or be indecisive.

While, the front door was the main issue with the home Jean was trying to sell, I also noticed some other areas that needed attention.  The house gave the impression that it had not been active in some time.  I suggested she add live energy with plants, flowers, hand towels and curtains that will give the potential buyers more of a feeling of home.

I’m delighted to say after implementing these simple suggestions Jean received an offer on the home!

Again, Feng Shui saves the day! And note that this was all done from photographs.  Yep!  Feng Shui can work extremely well even from a simple photograph.

I’ll add one more note about front doors, a recent client of mine moved out of her home office into an office space. I suggested she get a colorful doormat and a decorative sign so she could stand out from all the other offices. She found a very colorful and cheery mat for the front door. Shortly after she put it out, a neighbor from down the hall knocked on the door and introduced herself. Following that another gal stopped by to say hello. She noticed that when she walked down the hallway her doormat was colorful and inviting, drawing attention to anyone who passed by. Feng Shui supports the principle that people will come to you if you set up the energy that is welcoming and inviting. Today, check your front door of your home and office and ask, “does it invite people in?”  If not, take steps today to make that change and see what turns up at your front door!
