How often do you find yourself going into a health food store or website checking out all the supplements that are sure to help whatever condition you are concerned about only to find yourself with $200 worth of supplements? You read all about what these supplements can do for you and first you are overwhelmed with all the information but then you become convinced and feel that you must have it all!

My clients often have countertops or cabinets cluttered with supplement bottles. The story is pretty much the same – “I forget to take them,”  “I don’t  remember why I bought it,”  “they don’t agree with me,”  “my husband takes all this stuff.” I’m fascinated by how the energy during these conversations drops and something that is meant to help my client have now become an energy drain, a dust collector and a space taker upper and a waste of money.

Let’s correct this problem, by setting aside some time to go through your supplements. Gather them up from all over your home.  I know they are hiding in the bathroom, your nightstand, etc. Create two piles, one of the supplements you take daily and another of those you haven’t taken in months. Check the expiration dates on the ones you haven’t used in months. This is the scary part, I’m in awe when I hear people have had things in their cabinet for years. Before you discard the expired ones, take a moment to reflect on why you purchased this item. Knowing the answer can help you stop repeating the same bad purchases. Remember this answer so you think about it next time you purchase a new supplement.

If you discover some items that haven’t expired and you decide to start taking them move them into your daily supplement area.

Here are my money saving tips when purchasing supplements:

  • Food is medicine, if you’re not eating a healthy diet no supplement will fix the problem alone. Food first then select supplements to support your weak areas.

  • Take a week off from supplements. It’s a good idea to give the body a rest from supplements. When you start back slowly introduce one product at a time, this will help you to see what’s working and what’s not.

  • Less is more! It doesn’t matter how good it is for you, don’t overdose on the good stuff.

  • Select good quality brands, don’t go cheap. Avoid supplements with Magnesium Stearate, always read labels before you buy and be sure if you use medications to check the manufacturer’s directions or talk with your doctor to make sure you don’t need to avoid certain herbs or supplements.

I am exposing my cabinet!  Here is where I store my supplements.

I suggest you keep your supplements in a space that you visit daily and that doesn’t clutter your counter tops.

There are some organizational tools you can find at Bed Bath and Beyond, The Container Store, Home Goods, and Target.
